The Leinster track championships is the traditional winding up of the Irish domestic track scene with a short TT and scratch race for all categories. In the men’s elite event Darragh Zaidan finished off his year in style taking the gold in the 500 TT. Fionn Sheridan of Orwell took silver and Andre Grennell bronze.
In the men’s scratch race Sam Gilmore (who’s decision not to ride the TT was to prove a good one) got away in an early 2 man break, getting enough of a gap to lap most of the field, except for his teammate Darragh Zaidan, who was trying to bridge across. Their teammate Andre Grennell took bronze. Sam was a member of the Arcane team pursuit team who took silver earlier in the year. He had also won the Madison event with Darragh Zaidan. This was a great result for Sam as he had spent 3 months this season out with a knee injury. Darragh Zaidan earlier this year had won the National Elite Scratch Championships and was riding in the colours of the National Champion.
Junior Hannah Tilly opted to ride the Elite women’s race where she acquitted herself very well and even managed to attack the senior women.
Brendan Whelan who sponsors the small track and road team said afterwards “ Already Irish National Champions, and today Leinster Champions … what can you say when our Elite Men (all so young ) go out & Win everything on the day , and our Junior women show enough to say they are doing this next year (you can’t win anything with kids) – not bad for a little bike company in Kildare , a big thank you to our supporters, sponsors & most importantly our Arcane Cycling Team riders”
